The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has honoured a 98-year-old military veteran, Ex-Warrant Officer Echenim Emmanuel Ewemiwe, in recognition of his service and sacrifices to the nation.
The board’s Chairman, Maj.-Gen. Julius Osifo, led a delegation to celebrate the veteran at Ute-Erumu, near Agbor, in Ika North-East Local Government Area of the state.
This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the board, Sqn.-Ldr. Aliyu Muhammed, on Friday in Abuja.
Mohammed said the visit coincided with Ewemiwe’s 98th birthday anniversary and provided an opportunity for the board’s leadership to identify with one of Nigeria’s oldest military veterans.
He said the delegation included Navy Commodore Galadima Ciroma, Director of Navy Pensions, and Capt. Robertson Akpojovwo, Delta Legion Chairman.
He quoted Osifo as acknowledging the sacrifices and contributions of military veterans across the country in his remarks.
Osifo reaffirmed the board’s commitment to their welfare and well-being, stressing that veterans’ welfare remained a priority.
The MPB chairman also said that the visit reflected the board’s commitment to preserving the dignity of veterans, recognising their service and identifying with them beyond the administration of pension benefits.
Speaking on behalf of the family, retired MWO Chuks Echenim thanked the MPB chairman for travelling to Delta to celebrate with their father and honour him on his milestone birthday.
The celebration featured cultural performances and traditional dances, with family members, friends and well-wishers in attendance.
Other dignitaries include the Aruwe of Ute-Erumu, clergy members and community leaders.(NAN)
