Member representing Udege/Loko constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana has resigned from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and joined the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The Speaker of the House, Dr. Danladi Jatau announced the defection of the lawmaker during the House proceedings in Lafia today on Wednesday.
The Speaker read the lawmaker’s letter as thus: I write to formally notify you and the entire House of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly of my decision to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective from today.
”This difficult decision comes after deep personal reflection and wide consultations with my family, stakeholders, and the good people of my constituency.
“Regrettably, the events, widespread irregularities, and the overall outcome of the just-concluded primary elections made it impossible for me to continue my political journey under the platform of the APC. I have chosen to pitch my tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
”I believe that the SDP offers a viable and progressive platform to best serve the interests and aspirations of my constituents” he said.
The Speaker wished him well in his next political journey.
Speaking in an interview, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, member representing Udege/ Loko Constituency said that he defected to SDP due to irregularities meted out on him during the APC primaries.
“Widespread irregularities, and the overall outcome of the just-concluded primary elections made it impossible for me to continue my political journey under the platform of the APC.
“I have chosen to pitch my tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP)” he said.
Hon. Onarigu appreciated APC for the cooperation given to him to serve.
” Despite these challenges, I remain deeply thankful to the APC for the platform, cooperation, and opportunities it afforded me to serve my constituents and the state.
“I appreciate the party leadership and every colleague I worked with during my time in the fold. I wish all remaining members of the APC well in their future political endeavors” he added.
He appreciated the people of his constituency for their continued support and assured them of more dividends of democracy.
It would be reported that APC now has 12 members, PDP 7 and SDP 5 respectively in the House.
In a related development, the House has passed into law A Bill for a Law to Amend College of Education Akwanga law 2023 to upgrade the Status of the College as a Degree Awarding Institution and Other related matters Therewith 2026.
Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced this during the House processings today in Lafia.
The Speaker said that the bill would give the institution authority to award degree certificates as well as improve on the standard of education in the institution.
He then, directed the Clerk of the House to communicate its resolution to Gov. Sule for his necessary action.
Earlier, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, the Majority Leader of the House moved a motion for the bill to scale third reading.
Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House seconded the motion.
The House unanimously passed the bill into law.
