The Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) has intensified efforts to equip senior military leaders with skills to tackle emerging security threats driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and evolving global dynamics.

The Director-General of NARC, retired Maj.-Gen. James Myam, said this on Tuesday in Abuja, at the inauguration of the Strategic Leadership Course 2/2026 organised in collaboration with King’s College London.

Myam said the growing application of AI had introduced new vulnerabilities and risks requiring strategic thinking, adaptability and informed leadership.

He said the programme was designed to equip senior military officersm and other stakeholders with strategies to navigate emerging challenges as the world evolved into a new global order.

According to him, the course will strengthen participants’ capacity to understand contemporary threats and develop appropriate responses to the changing security environment.

Myam said the programme was conducted twice a year to expose senior leaders of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other stakeholders to contemporary geostrategic issues.

He said Phase One focused on “Adaptive Leadership in the Context of Shifting Global Norms, Alliances and Geopolitical Competition in Africa: Issues and Options for Nigeria.”

He said Phase Two was themed “Adaptive Leadership and National Security in Nigeria: Coping with Artificial Intelligence and Social Vulnerabilities in an Era of Changing Global Norms and Geopolitical Competition.”

The NARC director-general urged participants to engage actively with resource persons and draw on their professional experiences to maximise the benefits of the programme.

He expressed appreciation to King’s College London for sustaining the partnership, commending its resource persons and facilitators for their commitment.

Myam also acknowledged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, who chairs the NARC Board of Trustees, for his guidance and support for the centre’s activities.

In his remarks, Mr Ralph Kent, Team Lead, King’s College London, said Nigeria was increasingly at the centre of global changes, with significant implications for its security and stability.

Kent said the emerging global order presented both opportunities and challenges, requiring leadership approaches beyond conventional or textbook solutions.

He said the collaboration with NARC provided an important platform for exchanging perspectives and exploring responses to increasingly complex global developments.

According to him, the programme seeks to strengthen adaptive leadership within Nigeria and beyond, particularly as institutions confront evolving security and governance challenges.

He expressed appreciation to NARC for creating an enabling environment for the partnership and making the collaboration meaningful.

The programme is part of efforts to strengthen strategic leadership and prepare senior decision-makers to respond effectively to emerging national, regional and global security challenges. (NAN)
