The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) says it is ready to partner with the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, in exchange programmes and capacity building, to enhance professionalism in the media sectors of both countries.

The Executive Secretary, NPC, Mr Francis Nwosu, said this when the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Mr Masudur Raham, paid a visit to the council on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Nwosu said that Nigeria and Bangladesh had some things in common, like the issue of circularism.

He added that the council was doing its best to enhance and solidify the unity of different groups in the country, through proper regulations.

“However, we are ready to involve in an exchange programme with your country’s Press Council, to build the capacity of staff to enhance effective regulation that would benefit Nigeria and Bangladesh.

“We want to see how to explore opportunities to collaborate and build the capacity of our staff in the council and journalists in Nigeria. We look forward to that opportunity when the COVID-19 pandemic eases.

“Also, we look forward to the sharing of ideas and exchange programmes between the Nigerian Press and Bangladesh’s Press,” Nwosu said.

Speaking earlier, Raham commended Nigerian journalists for their professionalism and doggedness in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

He explained the similarities between Nigeria and his country, stressing that collaboration will benefit the two countries.

Raham said that there were programmes that Nigerian journalists would benefit from Bangladesh, adding that if not for the COVID-19 pandemic, he would have loved them to visit his country.

He said that Bangladesh would celebrate its 50th independence anniversary in July, and extended an invitation NPC.
