Some stakeholders in the FCT, have urged returning students to improve their performances in the second term academic session.
They spoke in separate interviews with the correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored resumption activities in Abuja on Monday.
The Principal, Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, Mr Ayo Ochiji, said a lot of academic and extra-curricular activities had been lined up for the students, expecting them to put their best to achieve success.
“We thank God for seeing us through to return to school.
“As you can see, we mean business, we started the cleaning of the school since Friday and the students came to wrap it up this morning.
“We expect excellence from the students because we have a lot of activities we planned to execute, for instance, we have our inter-house sports competition and robotic team will be going for a contest.
“We hope to source for money before government approves our demands to take the students for the completion and believing that after they achieve a feat, they can go internationally,’’ he said.
On security, the principal explained that the school’s members of staff had been encouraged to be watchful and security conscious.
Also speaking, Principal, Junior Secondary School (JSS), FHA Lugbe, Mrs Blessing Nwaeto said inadequate teachers had been the major challenge towards learning outcomes in most schools.
Nwaeto, therefore, called on the government to employ more teachers to aid learning in schools while urging students to be of good conduct and take their studies seriously.
“ We advise students to be of good conduct and be serious with their studies, attend classes, take part in all activities of the school, and obey all school rules and regulations.
“Our challenge as a school is not different from other schools, we are short of staff the few members of staff have overloads of work.
“And if you don’t have enough teachers, it will affect teaching and learning.
“The few members of staff we have are overworked to meet up with the lessons, imaging a situation where a teacher teaches about eight arms, this is not easy for them,’’ she said.
On their parts, some students expressed concern over the quality of education in the country.
Amina Usman, SS3 student of GSS, Garki appealed to the government and those in charge of the education sector to implement technological facilities to aid learning.
Usman also advised other student to take their studies seriously to be champions in their academics.
Also, Aishat Aliyu, a JSS3 student of JSS, Lugbe advocated for a friendly learning environment for students.
NAN correspondent gathered that students were seen cleaning the school environment getting ready for the second term academic exercise.
At the Federal Government Boys College, Apo, the boarding students, who resumed on Jan. 7, had settled in to commence academic session while day students were entering into the school. (NAN)
