An organisation, the Global Women Network (GWN) has said it is making plans to empower women particularly those with skills but are dependent, to go above their present position and become self-reliant.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Abuja branch of the network and launch of “Women in tech seminar and its ICT courses’’, the founder of the organisation, Mrs Roni Akins, said that it was birthed to better the lives of women in the society.

She said that the organisation was formed in collaboration with other business and professional women from different sectors who are determined to give back to their communities, saying that is why the organisation is also called “the give back network’’.

Akins who is based in the United Kingdom (UK) stated that part of the aims of the network was to serve as a bedrock on mentoring platform where its members would impact their experiences, as well as invest time and resources to help Africa grow.

According to her, the mentoring programme will provide training, business advice and support in business set-up.

She explained that once the training is completed, the organisation would help the mentees in securing jobs and provide business and professional advice to them.

She listed the areas where the network majored on as Real Estate training, Facility Management training, Estate Management, Project Management, Travel, Telecommunications, Legal and Hospitality, adding that those interested should visit online to search for the name.

Mrs Hajara kadiri, a legal practitioner, who saluted the initiative of GWN stated that women movement all over the world had been at the forefront of advansing younger women participation in legislation, politics and businesses.

Kadiri who was represented by Mrs Betty Olutunde, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Betneely Charity Foundation, said that the women were also determined of getting gender equality both in and out of the workplace, local, national and global levels.

“The incidence of young women being or ending up abused in the process of seeking empowerment, help and self-dependence is quite recurrent in our society today and all over the world.

“The establishment of a network like the GWN, with the aim of women helping women, empowers the young women through a safe and accountable process goes a long way to drastically reduce the incidences of women abuse.

“In Nigeria, we can point to some instances of powerful impact of women, young and old, mobilizing towards and around a common cause. Clear example are the ongoing mobilization of women to strategise towards ending the marginalization of women in elected political offices across party line.

“In spite of the noted positive impacts of women and women’s organization, participation in business, politics, ICT, real estate and leadership, they have continue to lag greatly.

“Evidences linking women’s participation with development, progress and peace are well known, and with this, there is a significant gap between what women know and what women do or get to do,’’ she stressed.

Kadiri said that the network would be a tool of advocacy for young Nigerian women towards actualising national sustainable development goals and commended the initiative.

Mrs Maryam Aliyu, the Managing Director of Shelter Suites and Hotel, commended the founder of the network and collaborators, saying that the initiative was apt especially now that the unemployment figure of Nigeria had been rated high.

She disclosed that from the official source, Nigeria unemployment figure had been put to be 33 per cent of the total population.

“The GWN is coming at a perfect time, we need empowerment in the country especially for women, businesses are driving with technology, ICT is crucial in any kind of business today.

“Women can work exceptionally if given the opportunity, women are built to undertake task,’’ Aliyu said. (NAN)
