Former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has restated his commitment to nurturing young writers’ potential in the literary world.
Buratai made the commitment in his remarks at the 2nd edition of the Young Adult Literature Prize (YALP) on Saturday at Gora, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The event which also included the public presentation of TALP 2024 Anthology titled “Truth & Dare” compiled and edited by Dr Lizi Ben-Iheanacho and Om’Oba Jerry Adesewo.
It is the visionary project of the TY Buratai Literary Initiative.
The initiative was supported by Tukur and Tukur Foundation, TY Buratai Humanity Care Foundation, Northeast Women for Development Agenda, Hajiya Hauwa Aliyu of Adams Pages Book Store and others.
“The concept is the most welcome and compelling proposition to identify the need, and create a dedicated platform that encourages our young adults to read, write and think critically about their society.
“To also harness and use literature as a powerful instrument for reflection and positive change.
“As a Soldier, Teacher and Diplomat, I witnessed first hand the transformative powers that ideas and narrative holds in shaping the destiny of our nation.
“Therefore, I accepted these roles not only as a Patron, but as a steadfast believer in the unique power of written words. I have always held a deep affection for books.
“I am convinced that a book can ignite the essential values of courage, discipline, patriotism and compassion; the very bedrock of both brave soldier and an exemplary citizens,.
“To witness what has been achieved in the last few months fills me with profound fulfillment; the quality of the entries, the passion of our young writers and dedication of the judges and entire team is truly inspiring.
“Through this initiative, we seek to support and celebrate young Nigerians who used literature to illuminate our shared experiences, courageously confront our realities and imagine better future for our nation,” Buratai said.
He further explained that as a tangible part of the commitment, the initiative has donated books to five selected schools in both Nasarawa State and Federal Capital Territory.
He added that plans are on the way to ensure that addition schools benefit from the project.
“My commitment to this vision is resolute.
”We will nurture the initiative, expand its reach and work tirelessly to ensure that the Young Adult Literature Prize becomes one of Nigeria’s most prestigious platforms for literacy excellence.”
He appreciated those that made donations and those that expressed desire to partners with the initiative.
Also speaking, the Chairman and Special Guest of Honour, retired Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said his commitment to Buratai’s endeavours was rooted in a deep-seated respect for the former COAS unwavering dedication to national development.
“Initiative like the YALP are very bedrock upon which the educational and moral advancement we seek for Nigeria must be built.
“I have no doubt that it will add to platforms, where young writers can showcase their creativity, imagination and writing skills with the utmost purpose of encouraging creative expression,” Ihejirika said.
