The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun a two-week warning strike nationwide following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced that the industrial action took effect immediately after the ultimatum expired at midnight on Sunday.
According to him, the strike aims to compel the government to fulfill its outstanding commitments and address lingering challenges confronting public universities across the country.
ASUU had, on September 28, 2025, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government as part of renewed efforts to push for the resolution of long-standing issues affecting the nation’s university system.
The union explained that the decision to embark on the warning strike became inevitable after several attempts to engage the government produced no tangible results.
Professor Piwuna declared:
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from 12.01a.m on Monday, October 13, 2025.
“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, as agreed at the last NEC meeting.” He said.
