The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (OFPSAN) has called for the formal and structured inclusion of organic fertiliser production and distribution in the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI).
The National President of OFPSAN, Alhaji Adams Musa, made the appeal at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said integrating organic fertiliser into the PFI would advance national food security, strengthen sustainable agriculture, and support millions of smallholder farmers.
Musa said the association remained committed to promoting soil health and enhancing the well-being of farmers in line with global shifts towards environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
He noted that incorporating organic fertiliser into the PFI would improve soil regeneration, reduce production costs, boost yields and crop quality, and create a more balanced national fertiliser framework.
“Our soils are increasingly degraded, climate variability is affecting yields, and farmers are demanding safer, more cost-effective solutions.
“Organic fertiliser is not just an alternative input but a critical component for long-term agricultural sustainability,” he said.
Musa stressed that healthier soil, water, and ecosystems would translate into healthier populations, adding that environmental protection must underpin national food systems.
He commended the Federal Government’s investments in local fertiliser production through the PFI, saying the initiative was a major driver of job creation, stable input prices, and reduced dependence on imported fertilisers.
Musa, however, urged the government to deepen and consolidate the programme.
He also called for strict enforcement of the policy restricting fertiliser raw material imports to the Federal Government to prevent market abuse, curb substandard products, stabilise prices, and safeguard local producers. (NAN)
