The National president of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Mr Nathaniel Atebije said that the National Urban policy provides the platform for reasserting urban space and territoriality.

He said that it was vital in providing the needed direction and course of action to support urban development.

He said the direction and pattern of growth and development of urban centres in Nigeria had become a matter of serious concern because of lack of planning and impunity.

“It is common knowledge that urban areas are the engines of growth and development of nations.

“I would still recommend that this policy be appropriately titled to be known and called “Nigeria Urban Planning and Development Policy” to minimize the rush to development.

“This is the only way our urban areas would be on a straight course to sustainable development,” Atebije said.(NAN)
