The Yobe government says it has established three special courts to enhance speedy dispensation of justice for Gender Based Violence cases in the state.

Gov. Mai Mala Buni stated this while inaugurating the 16-day activism campaign against GBV on Friday in Damaturu.

Represented by his deputy, Idi Gubana, the governor said the courts had been set up in collaboration between the state Ministry of Women Affairs and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

He reiterated commitment to the protection of fundamental rights as well as wellbeing of women and children, adding that he had earlier assented to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Child Protection Law.

The governor expressed optimism that the judicial reforms implemented by his administration would address the menace of GBV in the state.

He assured that government would continue to introduce viable programmes to fast track women and girls empowerment.

Buni commended the UNFPA and other development partners for their support towards GBV in the state.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hauwa Abubakar said the campaign would focus on attracting funding for programmes aimed at ending GBV.

She lauded the proposed establishment of seven girls secondary schools, saying the gesture would enhance school enrolment among girls in the state.

The commissioner thanked the UNFPA for the construction, renovation and equipping of the state owned Motherless Babies Home to a standard Women and Girls Dignity Centre.

“It is a one stop centre for GBV survivors and other vulnerable women and girls who are traumatised as a result of gender-based violence.

“So far, UNFPA and other partners have supported the training of over 500 beneficiaries at the centre, in partnership with Ministry of Women Affairs,” she said.

Highlight of the event is the presentation of award of excellence to the governor by the ministry.
