The Nigerian Navy has commenced a clean-up exercise at Jabi Lake, Abuja, as part of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Lake Day.

The exercise, organised by Naval Base Abuja, is aimed at raising public awareness on the need to preserve lakes and other water bodies.
Commander Naval Base Abuja, Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, said the United Nations had designated Aug. 27 annually for the global observance of World Lake Day.
Oladipo said the commemoration was designed to highlight the importance of lakes and promote their preservation for present and future generations.
He said the clean-up of Jabi Lake was particularly significant because of its location in the Federal Capital Territory and its recreational importance.
According to him, residents and visitors use the lake for sports, recreation and relaxation, making its protection a collective responsibility.
The commander said the Nigerian Navy would sustain the initiative through annual and periodic clean-up exercises to promote a healthy environment.
He added that the exercise would also support the sustainable growth and preservation of the lake’s flora and fauna.
Oladipo said the public should expect additional activities as part of the Nigerian Navy’s programme for the 2026 World Lake Day.
He called for stronger collaboration among relevant stakeholders and members of the public to protect Jabi Lake and other water bodies.
The commander said the initiative demonstrated the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to environmental sustainability and preservation of the nation’s water resources.
