The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has urged future military commanders to embrace synergy, strategic leadership and innovation to enhance operational effectiveness.
Aneke gave the charge during a lecture titled, “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective”, delivered to participants of Air War Course 12/2026 at the Air Force War College, Makurdi.
The participants comprised senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, alongside allied officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.
The CAS said today’s complex security environment required leaders with foresight, adaptability and collaborative mindsets capable of translating national strategic objectives into operational success across multiple theatres.
According to him, military leadership extends beyond command authority to inspiring personnel, shaping institutions and delivering decisive military effects through coordinated planning, innovation and professional excellence across the Armed Forces.
He emphasised that synergy among the Armed Forces remained indispensable, describing integrated planning and coordinated execution as force multipliers capable of achieving outcomes beyond individual Service capabilities.
“Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” Aneke said, adding that deliberate integration of airpower with surface forces remained central to addressing contemporary security challenges effectively.
The CAS said his command philosophy focused on building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering effective airpower in synergy with surface forces nationwide.
He said the vision was being advanced through mission-focused training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and proactive measures designed to sustain operational readiness and long-term institutional effectiveness.
According to him, strategic leadership depends on policy foresight rather than reactive decision-making, underscoring the need to prepare commanders for future security challenges through continuous professional development.
Aneke stressed that the strength of any Air Force ultimately resided in its personnel, urging participants to cultivate strategic thinking, ethical leadership, emotional intelligence and lifelong learning.
He also encouraged future commanders to build trust across Services and with partner nations, describing such relationships as the foundation for successful joint operations and enduring military effectiveness.
The lecture ended with an interactive session where participants exchanged ideas with the CAS on strategic leadership, joint operations and future warfare to strengthen interoperability and joint force integration.
