Nasarawa Assembly Lawmakers, staff train on IPSAS for transparency, accountability in budget, governance

………As Speaker hails Gov. Sule for approving the workshop, tasks participants to acquaint themselves with its knowledge.

Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, management staff and Committee Secretaries are undergoing training on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) for transparency and accountability in public finance reporting and budgetary provisions in the State.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House declared open the Three Days Workshop organized for Lawmakers, Management Staff and Committee Secretaries in Makurdi, Benue State today .

It would be reported that the training workshop was organized by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in collaboration with Fawu Converse Resources.

The Speaker, who was represented by his Deputy Rt. Hon. Mohammed Adamu Oyanki appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule for approving the workshop aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability.

” First and foremost, I want to commend His Excellency, Gov Abdullahi Sule for approving this workshop.

” As this workshop will ensure transparency and accountability in governance in the state and will enhance effectiveness in budgetary.

” I want to assure His Excellency of our continued commitment and readiness to give him all the needed and necessary support to succeed” he said.

He said that IPSAS enhances transprency and credibility in budget planning and strengthens trust in governance.

” Aiming to improve transparency and accountability in public finance reporting.

” The primary objective of IPSAS is to enhance the quality of general purpose financial reporting in the public sector and this workshop will address this and other financial improvement and standard issues.

The Speaker said that the House will use the knowledge gained to ensure due diligence on the 2026 budget.

” At the end of the workshop, you will go home with well equipped knowledge that will help in 2026 budgeting processes in order to ensure that the budget is done to its best standard.

The Speaker used the medium to call on the people of the state to continue to support Gov. Sule’s administration to succeed.

The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara said that the workshop would be impactful to the lawmakers, management staff and the committee secretaries.

” I want to appreciate His Excellency for approving the Workshop which is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the state” he said.

Also speaking, Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House said that the workshop would equip participants with knowledge on IPSAS for good budgeting.

” We have gathered here to equip ourselves with Knowledge on IPSAS for good budget.

” I believe members will be equipped and will use the knwowledge gained in 2026 budget processes” he said.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdullateef of the Department of Accounting, University of Keffi while presenting a paper titled “IPSAS Adoption and Legislative Oversight in Nigeria” said that IPSAS is a global accounting standards used by governments and other public sector entities for preparing financial statements.

He said that the rationale for IPSAS enhance transparency in public financial reporting.

The financial expert also said that IPSAS provides a standardized framework for public financial statements.

” Improve comparability of financial statements with international standards

” Strengthen fiscal discipline and resource management among other benefits” he said.

He said that there is synergy between IPSAS and Legislative Oversight, saying that IPSAS improves the quality of reports legislators use to oversight

“Enable data-driven analysis of public spending and enhances transprency and strengthens trust in governance,” he said.

Dr. Mohammed Okpoku of the Department of Accounting, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Spoke extensively on the Role of IPSAS in Enhancing Budget Credibility, Performance Reporting and Outcome- Based Accountability.

He said that IPSAS are set of accounting Standards issues by the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board for use by public sector entities around the world.

” They provide principles for financial reporting that enhance transparency and accountability” he said.

He said that IPSAS supports budget credibility by enabling better alignment between approved budgets and actual expenditures.

Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala Chairmen House Committee on Education, Hon. Solomon Akwashiki, Chairman Public Accounts and Mr Paul Okugya, Secretary, Education Committee appreciated Gov. Sule and Speaker Jatau for approving the workshop describing it as timely.

He said that the workshop would equip them with IPSAS knowledge for effective service delivery among other benefits that will be drivable from it.
