Safepoint and Care Initiative, a. Non Governmental Organization NGO, has sought the support of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, for the passage of Special Seats Bill.
Dr. Amina Omeri, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Safepoint and Care Initiative made the call when she led other members of the NGO to the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Dr. Danladi Jatau in Lafia today.
It would be reported that the founder of the NGO was accompanied by consortium members from 100 Women Lobby Group, Women in Politics Forum, Women in Media and Development Initiative, Development Partners such as Global Affairs Canada and ActionAid among others.
She said that the Special Seats Bill was to create special seats for women in legislature to ensure more inclusive governance, bring unique perspectives to decision making for national development.
According to her, the Special Seats Bill is a proposed constitutional amendment designed as a temporary special measure to boost the number of women in the legislature.
” Rt. Hon Speaker Sir, we are here to solicit for your support on the Special Seats Bill.
” Sir, the bill is presently before the National Assembly undergoing legislation, we appeal to you to give your support to the bill, if its comes to your table, we need your support for the bill to be pass into law.
” The Special Seats Bills is a legislation that allocates reserved or designated seats in a legislative body for women/gender representation” she said.
Dr. Omeri said that the bill would give more women the opportunities to contribute their quota to national develoment.
Responding, Dr. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House appreciated them for the visit and assured them of the House support for the bill to see the light of the day.
” I am happy and overwhelmed with your visit. Women in leadership positions are doing well.
” In this House, we have Dr. Hajarat Ibrahim Danyaro, the only female lawmaker and she is doing well, she is doing great things and we are proud of her.
” I want to assure you of our support to enable the bill pass into law, if it comes to us for our inputs, be rest assured we will do the needful” he said.
