The Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) has led an advocacy on land protection and green future to commemorate the 2025 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
The President of NAFOWA, Mrs Rakiya Abubakar, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja, during the desertification and drought campaign with the theme, “United for land, Our legacy Uur Future”.
Abubakar urged all to be ambassadors of a green future, saying that desertification was not just about the environment, but its effects on the people.
She said that a large percentage of developed economies rely solely on nature with almost half of the world’s GDP dependent on it.
According to her, for every one minute, about four football fields are lost to desertification.
“There is a fast rate of degradation and we all can make a difference.
“When we do this, migration will be low, we will have food and water security and even job opportunities.
“I urge us all to start individually from our homes , we can plant trees in our homes and villages Don’t just stop at planting, care for the tree.
“This will create a ripple effect and we will see the difference. Our land is our legacy, let’s nurture it and hand over a greener future to the next generation,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar led the movement at the NAF Base Asokoro by planting of mango and orange trees among others.
The tree-planting initiative is to shield the earth, nourish the soil, and inspire a nation. (NAN)
