The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has called for stakeholders’ commitment in transforming the nation’s commonwealth in education, thereby ensuring equal access to quality education for all.
Mamman spoke at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday to herald the upcoming annual commemoration of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations, held on the second Monday in March.
The theme for the 2024 celebration, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealth”, will underlie all Commonwealth activities for the year reflecting the shared values, goals and priorities.
The minister said that the theme highlighted the strength and unity within the diverse commonwealth family to build resilience in the face of global challenges.
According to him, we must navigate through transformative times by leveraging on the connectedness of deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill among member countries.
“The Federal Government is investing in innovative teaching methods, supporting teachers in embracing technology, and promoting a culture of lifelong learning.
“This will enable the attainment and sustainability of a more equitable and prosperous future for all nationwide.
“In furtherance of the aforementioned theme, the Ministry is imploring all the 36 State Ministries of Education and the Federal Capital Territory Education Board to commemorate the Day on the second Monday in March which is March 11, 2024.
“This will provide an enabling opportunity to promote democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, cooperation, equality and mutual respect for nation building,” he said.
Mamman listed the activities lined up for the day as including youth lecture, quiz competition, parade of the Commonwealth Flags, poetic rendition and dramatisation of the 2024 Commonwealth Observance Theme.
Other activities, he said, would include Cultural Display and dress rehearsal to ensure that every aspect of the commemoration was executed with precision and elegance.
Reacting to a statement by the Union of Nigerian Students under the Bilateral Educational Agreement (BEA) Scholarship on delay in the payment of their stipends, Mamman said that the stipends were being processed and all concerned would get their payments soon. (NAN)
